Han Bennink 70th Birthday Concert
Apr 21, 2012 07:30 PM
Join WKCR-FM in celebrating the music of renowned Dutch percussionist Han Bennink with a marathon radio festival and concert. On April 21, Bennink will be performing live at The Italian Academy of Columbia University. Bennink will be joined by Richard Teitelbaum, Ray Anderson, Mark Dresser, Uri Caine, and others.
Bennink has performed alongside musicians synonymous with jazz, including Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry, and Marion Brown. But Bennink’s music stretches beyond genre. His playing, whether in a straight-ahead or free context, has consistently been both swinging and inventive. Beginning in the 1960s, his work with titans of European free improvisation, and his ongoing projects with pianist Misha Mengelberg and countless other luminaries, stand as foundations for modern improvised drumming. Bennink’s discography covers over 50 years, and as he turns 70 on April 17, WKCR will explore this collection with a five-day, 120-hour festival. In the spirit of WKCR festivals past, we are proud to offer Bennink’s live performance and his music to our listeners .
Tune in to 89.9 FM NY, or wkcr.org on April 17 when we begin our music festival of Han Bennink!
