Umbria Jazz 12
Jul 06 - Jul 15, 2012
Few times in the past has the programme boasted such an impressive lineup of rock and pop superstars, naturally without forgetting jazz. The festival has without a doubt undergone changes since 1973 but has never betrayed the spirit and identity that, together with the high quality lineup, have granted its success and popularity.
The festival opens on the 6th of July with: CHICK COREA-STEFANO BOLLANI DUET STEFANO BOLLANI-HAMILTON DE HOLANDA DUET
The duo’s collaboration began at Umbria Jazz ‘09, born from an idea of thefestival’s artistic director Carlo Pagnotta. The pair immediately found themselves in accord, as shown when the prestigious German record label ECM recorded their concert during Umbria Jazz Winter #18, titling the disc ‘Orvieto’. Chick Corea won 2 Grammy awards in 2012: "Best Improvised Jazz Solo" with "500 Miles High" and "Best Jazz Instrumental Album" with "Forever". To follow Stefano Bollani with Hamilton de Holanda: Brasilian from Rio, moving at a young age to Brasilia, unchallenged king of the new choro and heir to Jacob do Bandolim, noted performer and point of reference for choro music for decades.
12th of July "PAT METHENY UNITY BAND"
A much loved artist with no need of introductions: Pat Metheny with the Unity Band, with Chris Potter on sax, Ben Williams on bass and Antonio Sanchez, his long time drummer and companion of many adventures. Metheny acquired his 19th Grammy in 2012, in the "Best New Age Album" category with "What's all about": a confirmation for one of the most multifaceted and influential artists of recent times.
13th of July: SONNY ROLLINS
Sonny Rollins in an Italian exclusive on the 13th of July: the sax colossus shows without a doubt he is a true living icon; with over 60 years of activity behind him the sound of his tenor sax remains unique while Rollins remains surrounded by millions of fans and legions of imitators. On stage he is a passionate and generous artist.
15th of July: STING "BACK TO BASS TOUR"
Not to be missed, on Saturday the 15th of July at the Arena Santa Giuliana of Perugia, Umbria Jazz 12 will close with Sting’s “Back to Bass Tour”, celebrating 25 years of the artist’s solo career.
Sting will be accompanied by a band composed of his long time collaborator, guitarist Dominic Miller, David Sancious (keyboard), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Peter Tickell (electric violin), and Jo Lawry (voice).
Composer, singer, author, actor, activist – Sting is acclaimed throughout the world. Born in Newcastle, England, Sting moved to London in 1977 and formed the Police together with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band produced five albums, won six Grammys and in 2003 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since 1985, Sting has produced 13 solo albums. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his solo career he has released the box set “25 Years” and a double CD “The Best of 25 Years”. One of the most important and highly respected artists in the world, Sting has sold almost 100 million albums (albums produced with the police and solo albums combined) and has won 10 Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and three Oscar nominations.
For Sting it is a return to Umbria Jazz; on the 11th of July 1987 he took the stage together with Gil Evans where he performed a number of his most well known pieces including Roxanne, Tea in the Sahara, Consider Me Gone and a cover of the Hendrix track Little Wing which Sting had already produced in the studio for the album...Nothing Like the Sun, tracks that Sting will most probably offer again to the public on the 15th of July.
