Six-time Grammy nominated guitarist Mike Stern’s music has always come from a colorful and diverse part of town, a place where numerous artistic styles converge to create a fresh sound that is rooted in jazz but refuses to adhere to rigid borders. Since his earliest recordings, this former bandmate of Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Cobham and other high-profile innovators, has grafted elements of rock, blues, soul and more to his solid jazz foundations. On Stern’s street, anybody who brings a sense of energy, eclecticism and passion to the craft of music is welcome to play.
Jazz bassist Richard Bona was born and raised in the West African nation of Cameroon, going on to session dates with Joe Zawinul, Regina Carter, and Bob James as well as a two-year stint as musical director for the great Harry Belafonte. He made his debut as a headliner in 1999 with Scenes from My Life, and two years later Reverence came out. In 2003, Bona made his Verve debut with Munia: The Tale, “The instrument enters him in every pore and the melody in the heart. Richard Bona is running his smile, his tranquility, and his musical elegance all over the world.” Bona is one of the most demanded artists on the international jazz scene. He is considered one of the best bass players in the world.
Legendary drummer, composer and producer Dave Weckl has developed and maintained a reputation among fans, peers and the international music community as one of the greatest living drummers. For this, he has received numerous accolades and honors; Modern Drummer inducted Dave into their Hall of Fame and named him "one of the 25 best drummers of all time." But these honors, in addition to many more bestowed by the music community, are the product of Dave's undying commitment to making great compositions. Dave's incredibly dynamic and diverse drumming, which has inspired musicians worldwide, is built on a solid foundation of knowledge and respect for music.
A native New Yorker, saxophonist Bob Franceschini begun his musical education in junior high, and then entered the High School of Music and Art where he met and played with Kenny Washington, Marcus Miller, and Omar Hakim. In the summer following their graduation, these young lions formed a jazz group who played an extended engagement at a club owned by George Benson. This opportunity gained Bob immediate recognition and led to tours with a number of outstanding artists including Tom Browne and Chaka Khan. He then went on to play with George Benson, Woody Shaw, Dave Valentine and others.
