Eric Dolphy At the Five Spot Revisited

Jul 07 - Jul 08, 2011

At the Five Spot, Volumes 1 & 2, are a pair of jazz albums documenting one night of multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy's two-week residency at the Five Spot in New York. That night, July 16, 1961, was the only one to be recorded by the famous engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Dolphy and trumpeter Booker Little were accompanied by pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Ed Blackwell. This quintet was, and still is, an inspiration for the progressive free bop jazz scene. The album might well be one of the best live jazz albums ever.
At North Sea Jazz, the music will be performed by a group of adventurous jazz musicians led by trumpeter Peter Evans and bassist Arjen Gorter, joined by Rudi Mahall, Alex Coke, and members of the group Mostly Other People Do The Killing. The concert is organized by The Bimhuis and North Sea Jazz; the first performance will be at the Bimhuis on July 7, followed by the July 8 concert at the festival.
