Trumpet icon Hugh Masekela has had a brilliant career, from his early days in the Huddleston Jazz Band in his native South Africa to music school in London and New York and then to his mid-1960s U.S. recording debut, facilitated by Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte. In 1968, his “Grazing in the Grass” became a mega-hit, selling millions of copies worldwide and launching him as an international superstar. Masekela’s musical adventures have found him working with Fela Kuti, the Ghanaian Afropop band Hedzoleh Soundz, the Kalahari Band, Paul Simon, and Herb Alpert. Having divided his time between Africa and the U.S., he is thoroughly fluent in myriad styles from jazz to pop and everything in between, and he’s synthesized them into his own unique, rhythmically compelling, spiritually uplifting music, which he brings to Yoshi’s Oakland.
