A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie whose musical influences include artists like Miriam Makeba and Lester Bowie, William Cepeda is a cultural icon of Puerto Rico. This Grammy-nominated artist and composer revolutionized the field of Latin music with his introduction of Afro-Rican Jazz, an innovative blend of world, progressive jazz and traditional Afro-Puerto Rican roots and folk music and dance. Born and raised in Loiza, the heart of "Little Africa" in Puerto Rico, Cepeda's artistic excellence, authenticity and advocacy for rigorous research and comprehensive documentation of Puerto Rican music and culture have earned him multiple awards and grants from organizations that include the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, Meet The Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Music Fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, American Composers Orchestra, American Composers Forum and the Association of Hispanic Arts.
Led by Greenpoint, Brooklyn's Tommy Mattioli, "El Gallo Italiano," a vibraphone virtuoso and renowned salsa and Latin jazz band leader in NYC, Rico Vibes serves up positive, high energy Latin jazz sounds, blending funk, Latin and jazz rhythms with original tunes and modern arrangements of standards and Latin jazz classics.
