STEN HOSTFALT BIOGRAPHY
A DIY/Independent creative music veteran with over 3 decades in creative Improvised, Jazz and Progressive modern music worldwide NYC guitarist, composer and bandleader STEN HOSTFALT has since the early 80's been recognized by leading international press/media for innovative contributions and notably since the early 90's as one of the most inventive and original voices on what we know as the most popular, most played instrument of our time.
In operating freely in a variety of styles from mainstream to avantgarde Jazz, electronica, drum n bass, folk and rock Mr. Hostfalt is bridging tradition and future with new self-invented techniques for the standard 6 string/12 fret guitar, as well as electric bass and mandolin.
And notably so with a variety of instrumentations/configurations, and to unanimous praise including being labeled virtuosic and exceptional by mentors, legendary icons of American Music and Jazz Joe Maneri and Jimmy Giuffre respectively, called groundbreaking by Don Williamson of Jazz Review, inimitable by PM NYC/Paper Magazine, impressive by Time Out NY, chosen a Guitar Player Magazine editor's pick.
Following composition master classes with Toru Takemitsu and Gyorgi Ligeti, theory studies with George Russell, the Gary Burton produced '91 CD debute feature as a guitar soloist with Herb Pomeroy's Berklee Jazz Orchestra, the mid 90's NYC concert and CD debute as a member of and featured soloist in Guillermo Klein's acclaimed ensemble at Smalls Jazz Club, And the new millenium with an original European art grant funded France tour, the debute CD as a leader initiated by mentor, famed talent scout and Master of Jazz Paul Bley and the critically acclaimed live recorded solo concert '29 Pieces For The Microtonal Guitar Live at Knitting Factory New York' .
Just out with his 5th and 6th album as a leader, NOW MATTER a duo with alto/tenor saxophonist Blaise Siwula and MONEYTOWN, a live concert recorded multi-genre quartet with microtonal music meeting live poetry/spoken word, all released on the Sonus Rex label, NYC. This concert finds Sten Hostfalt in a guitar, saxophone and drums trio representing and referring to all recorded works and ensemble settings as a leader, from solo to quartet while stylistically bridging traditional, avantgarde and microtonal music forms.
