Branford Marsalis and the New York Philharmonic
Feb 16 - Feb 19, 2011
This Valentine’s holiday, treat your sweetheart to a special evening with the New York Philharmonic and Branford Marsalis performing concertos for the saxophone:
“Glazunov filled the solo line in his Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra with sweet melodic turns, and he gave the instrument a richly detailed, virtuosic cadenza. The music seemed perfectly suited to Mr. Marsalis’s velvety tone, lush vibrato and soulful approach to phrasing.
You can hear Shulhoff’s love of jazz in the bluesy turns of his Jazz Concerto’s Andante and in the zesty syncopations of the finale, which the scoring hints at a big-band sound. Mr. Marsalis’s energetic, beautifully proportioned reading made a powerful case for the work.”
