42nd Burghausen International Jazz Festival
Mar 22 - Mar 27, 2011
Internationally renowned musicians like Kurt Elling, Clayton-Hamilton, Larry Coryell and Helge Sunde will transform the city of Burghausen into the Bavarian home of jazz. A top class jury has chosen five young and talented bands to compete for a 15.000 EUR prize, and a top slot on stage as the opening act for Chick Corea and Gary Burton in the “Wackerhalle“ on Wednesday. Chick Corea will be honoured on Tuesday with a new bronze plaque on the “Street of Fame“, the city´s musical guest book. Friday has hot and crazy drumming (Drums United), full-blooded playing (Trombone Shorty), and DEPHAZZ taking you dancing in the GUM. The music fever spreads across the old town on Saturday with restaurants and cafés as well as the main venues “Wackerhalle“, “Stadtsaal“ and “Mautnerschloss“ inviting you to take part in all things jazz. The nightly jazz enthusiasts´ sessions in the basement of the Mautnerschloss are a real insider's tip. For the first time, these sessions will showcase Belgian pianist Jef Neve´s multi-award winning trio. The end of every festival week in Burghausen is Next Generation Day, when four first class bands will provide an exciting insight into the contemporary jazz scene.
The 3rd Burghausen Young Artist Award : “from little to big“
It´s the perfect description for the five finalists chosen to open the Burghausen festival on Tuesday March 22nd. Whether as a trio (the Austrian group Random Control and the Dirk Häfner Trio from Dresden, Germany), quartet (the Danish Interfoam), quintet (the Cologne Offshore Quintett) or even Big Band (Beats & Pieces Big Band, UK), all are under 30 years of age and on their way to rank among the big names of European jazz. With more participants then the year before, the top class jury is looking forward to an exciting final on Tuesday. Aside from the prime slot as opening act for Chick Corea and Gary Burton in the “Wackerhalle“, the winner will also receive 15.000 EUR - one of the largest young talent prizes in Europe!
10 top-class concerts over 4 days in the “Wackerhalle“
Soccer and chemistry take second place during the jazz festival, when top class musicians play the “Wackerhalle” from March 23rd to the 26th. While the evenings belong to jazz, the Music Maker Blues Foundation und Teeny Tucker give Saturday afternoon over to the blues. International stars fill the bill at the big hall and promise a sensational and exciting time for both connoisseurs and music lovers alike with Chick Corea/Gary Burton, Drums United, Night of Jazz Guitars (with Larry Coryell, Philip Catherine and Paulo Morello among others), Joe Lovano, Trombone Shorty, Kurt Elling, John and Jeff Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, and John Pizzarelli appearing.
The fun goes on: The Friday Dance Night with DJs and DEPHAZZ
Even after the pumping rhythms of Drums United and Trombone Shorty, the party at the GUM on Friday March 25th will still be kicking on. DEPHAZZ give Burghausen's Dance Night their personal touch and play in a way that will get everybody's feet moving. Afterwards, the DJs Bastian Schuster and Marco Wahl will take over for the night.
Saturday: The old town becomes a jazz stronghold
In the shadow of Europe´s longest castle, the old town will be turned into a jazz stronghold on Saturday, March 26th. While with Dan Berglund´s Tonbruket and the Helge Sunde Ensemble Denada Scandinavia takes over the Stadtsaal, the pubs, restaurants and bars of the old town turn the night into day with jazz and musical sounds. Saturday, a day so full of musical highlights, will be brought to a close with a late night session by the Jef Neve Trio.
Next Generation Day – showing off contemporary young jazz
The conclusion of each year's Burghausen International Jazz Festival is the Next Generation Day. This year, three exciting bands from Germany and Austria will be presented at the Stadtsaal: the Klaus Heidenreich Quartet, Dombert's Urban Jazz and Bastian Stein Gravity Point. All three are promising groups which perfectly demonstrate the wide jazz spectrum to be found here and in the surrounding area. Finally, the Hannah Köpf Band invites you to an intimate, sensuous and poetic ending to the festival, at night in the Mautnerschloss.
