10th Annual Trinity Jazz Festival
Jan 28 - Jan 30, 2011
Set in the acoustically brilliant sanctuary of the historic Trinity Church, the Trinity Jazz Festival has drawn enthusiastic crowds throughout its ten-year history. This year, the Friday and Saturday evening concerts feature not only the stellar musicians who are headlining but two award-winning student jazz groups who open the shows each night. The festival culminates on Sunday morning with the traditional jazz mass at 10:30am and 12:30pm in which many of the musicians from the previous nights perform. The Sunday mass is free and open to the public, and tickets for the Friday and Saturday concerts are available online through the festival website.
The festival's founder, Father William B. Miller sees jazz -- city music par excellance -- as a vehicle for emphasizing both the historic Trinity Church's urban setting, and its commitment to artistic expression. The first festival featured Ellis Marsalis, the patriarch of the famed New Orleans jazz family, and Ed Calle, the popular Miami saxophonist, with each artist headlining outstanding performances. Subsequent festivals have featured David “Fathead” Newman, trumpeter Marvin Stamm, Kirk Whalum, Bud Shank, Andre Hayward, Jason Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Suzi Stern, Barrie Lee hall Jr., Kyle Turner, David Liebman, Roseanna Vitro and Jason Moran.
