Cecil Taylor at La Maison Francaise in Washington, DC

Nov 10, 2010 07:30 PM - 09:30 PM

Pianist, poet and creative force Cecil Taylor at the Embassy of France on Wednesday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Internationally known for the brilliance and audacious beauty of his music, classically trained pianist and poet Cecil Taylor - one of the pioneers of “free jazz” - is an authentic musical revolutionary.

With a playing style characterized by dynamic energy and physicality, Taylor conjures complex improvised tone clusters and polyrhythms, blending jazz and modern classical sensibilities with frequent literary allusions. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973 and entry into Down Beat magazine’s Critics Poll Hall of Fame in 1975, Taylor continues to amaze generations of jazz lovers. Respected cultural critic Nat Hentoff has declared that "once you absorb [Taylor’s] music you will never quite hear the same again."

"To encounter his sound and science, to see his own continuing fascination with his mixing of secret musical potions, is to come face to face with a rare thing: unfettered originality and courage." - All About Jazz

Fêted last fall in France in celebration of his 80th birthday, La Maison Française is proud to now pay its own tribute to the legendary Cecil Taylor.
