Jimmy Ellis, a native Chicagoan and Hyde Park jazz saxophone master, graduated from DuSable High School in 1950, and studied under Captain Walter Dyett. Throughout his notable career, Ellis has worked with many jazz legends, including Nat "King" Cole, Earl "Fatha" Hines and Sun Ra.
George Freeman was born in Chicago, and the guitar became his method of communication as he moved into the heart of the 20th century. The music of George Freeman defies any known mold of musical expression. It is not restricted to swing, blues, bop, rock or modern -Freeman has been a living part of all of these eras.
Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month! Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations. Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music. The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. As always, Katerina’s serves great cocktails and fine food! Katerina’s – an eclectic club with its soul in the arts.
Southport Records & Katerina’s salutes the Jazz Institute of Chicago for thirty two years of festival programming. The Chicago Jazz Fest is the world’s largest free jazz festival. Over the years, Southport artists including Von Freeman, George Freeman, Sparrow, Willie Pickens, Bobby Lewis, Paulinho Garcia, Tatsu Aoki, Joanie Pallatto, Marshall Vente, Fred Anderson, Famoudou Don Moye, Susan May, among many others have graced the stages of this majestic event. We invite everyone to come to Katerina’s to celebrate the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s accomplished and ambitious programming efforts, keeping jazz alive in Chicago!
