Award-winning New York-based Jazz guitar phenom, composer, multi-instrumentalist, microtonal guitar pioneer and veteran music educator Sten Hostfalt has been described as "Groundbreaking" by Jazz Review's Don Williamson, "Inimitable" by PM NYC / Paper Magazine ,"Impressive and Intense" by Time Out NY, "Highly Exceptional" and "Virtuosic" by mentors legendary icons of American music Jimmy Giuffre and Joe Maneri respectively.
As well as following a decade long stint as an apprentice in legendary traditional Jazz orchestras directed by Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson and George Russell, appearing as a soloist and/or leader on CD releases initiated by giants of Jazz Paul Bley and Gary Burton. For the past 15 years enthusiastically featured alongside some of the most innovative musicians in the world, in leading international creative music press such as TomaJazz (Spain), Altrisuoni (Italy), Svenska Dagbladet and Orkesterjournalen (Sweden), Bad Alchemy (Germany), Jazz Guitar International and JazzViews ( U.K.) and prime U.S. media outlets Guitar Player Magazine, Jazz Now, All Music, All About Jazz and The New York Times.
His Monday March 1, 2010 concert lineup at Spike Hill, NYC is fittingly a highly esteemed cast comprised of recent Grammy-award winning first call NYC bassist Tim Luntzel ( Laudon Wainwright III, Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Bill Frisell ) and acclaimed serbian-american drum virtuoso and Vic Firth A-list signature endorser Marko Djordjevic - a frequent sideman with among others Rick Margitza, Wayne Krantz, Grant Green Jr. and an internationally active and celebrated bandleader in his own right, hosting improvising artists like Lionel Loueke, Gretchen Parlato, Janek Gwizdala, Elliot Mason and Gregoire Maret.
Past original Sten Hostfalt lineups, as a leader / co-leader or with featured guests live in concert or on recordings, have for the past two decades among others included electric bass guitar phenom Matthew Garrison ( Whitney Houston, John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Steve Coleman, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell ), acoustic bassists Johannes Wiedenmueller, Bruno Raberg, Matt Pavolka, Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus) and Shayna Dulberger. Multi-instrumentalist Takuya Nakamura (Quincy Jones, Brazilian Girls, The Streets), Saxophonists Seamus Blake (John Scofield), Blaise Siwula (Cecil Taylor), Matt Renzi and Ole Mathisen, vibraphonist Tom Beckham, violinist Katt Hernandez and drummers Jimmy Weinstein, Dave Miler and Cyril Atef.
Highly active on the creative NYC scene ever since 1994, and initially so weekly during the early days and inception of one of the present era's most influential venues in Jazz - Mitch Borden's Small's Jazz Club. As an original member of and frequently featured soloist with the first NYC edition of Guillermo Klein's pioneering large ensemble featuring Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Ingrid Jensen, Aaron Goldberg and Chris Cheek. Sten Hostfalt's current/most recent shared concert events as a sideman on guitar, electric bass, mandolin and electronics have included Tim Berne, MOBY, Daniel Carter and Keith Murray ( DEF SQUAD )
