A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents' generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and '60s. In a nearly three-decade-long recording career that has brought her two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations, Schuur's music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape. She is acclaimed for her "alternating qualities of intimate tenderness and outgoing theatricality, the sure sense of rhythm and phrasing, the unerring perfect pitch" (JazzTimes). Part of the 2010 International VSA arts Festival.

Diane Schuur will give two performances on the evening of June 11, 2010 at 7:30 and 9:30. Tickets will be available for purchase to the public beginning Apr. 7, 2010 on the Kennedy Center website.

Brad Mehldau, Piano

Mehldau’s musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in a beginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. His performances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process of abstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a stripped down, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over the years, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

15th annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival, hosted by Dee Dee Bridgewater
All the 2008 and 2009 concerts sold out--so for 2010, be sure to buy your tickets for this annual Kennedy Center festival featuring today's top female jazz artists. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Mary Lou Williams's birth, this season's concerts will highlight the compositions and arrangements of Mary Lou herself. The concert on Friday, May 21, will feature an extended performance by the all-star quintet of Dee Dee Bridgewater, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, and Grace Kelly. The Washington Post says the festival "speaks volumes about the contributions women have made to jazz--and continue to make--both here and abroad." A complete lineup will be released at a later date.

Tickets will be available to the public for purchase beginning February 10, 2010. Ticket purchasing options and complete festival information are available at the Kenney Center website.

Soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and one of VH1's "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll," both with The Staple Singers and on her own, is responsible for blazing a rhythm and blues trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots. She performs works from her release Hope at The Hideout, a live album recorded in June 2008 during a performance at The Hideout, Chicago's renowned stronghold of alt country and purist rock and roll. "While performing a 14-song set that canvassed her 52-year career, Staples sang with a voice that has long distinguished her from the R&B greats of her era and those who reach for that crown today" (The Chicago Tribune).

Brad Mehldau Trio

Brad Mehldau (piano) “Universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years” (Los Angeles Times), Brad Mehldau has forged a path which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny, Renee Fleming, and Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike.

Larry Grenadier (Bass) attended Stanford University where he received a BA Degree in English Literature. After moving to the East Coast he played Gary Burton Band, touring US and Europe. He moved to New York City and played with Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, Pat Metheny and the John Scofield Group. For the past year when not touring and recording with Brad Mehldau Trio he tours and records with the Pat Metheny Trio.

Jeff Ballard (Drums, Percussion) grew up in Santa Cruz, California. Toured with Ray Charles from 1988 – 1990. Moved to New York in 1990. Since then, he has played and recorded with Lou Donaldson, Danilo Perez, Chick Corea, and Joshua Redman to name a few. Currently, as well as being a member of the Brad Melhdau Trio, he is a co-leader of the collective group FLY (feat. Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard), and Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band.

Renowned for her bebop mastery and for infusing traditional Japanese music into bold, original arrangements, Toshiko Akiyoshi is a pianist, composer, and bandleader with "unmistakable lyrical gifts" (The New Yorker). A 2007 NEA Jazz Master, Kennedy Center Living Jazz Legend, and Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award recipient, the multiple Grammy nominee continues to be a driving force in the jazz world, touring and recording to great critical praise. Last seen at the Center in 2006, Akiyoshi performs two intimate concerts with her trio in her KC Jazz Club debut on the opening day of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Toshiko Akiyoshi will give two performances on the evening of March 27, 2010 at 7:30 and 9:30. Tickets go on sale to the public on December 9, 2009. Ticket purchasing options and complete concert information are available on the Kennedy Center website.
