One of the brightest young trumpeters on the jazz scene today, Christian Scott has made a strong impression with his open-minded style, warm tone and two Concord recordings. Born in New Orleans, he started on the trumpet when he was 12. The nephew of altoist Donald Harrison, Scott developed very quickly and at 16 went on the road as a member of his uncle’s band. He attended the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts and Berklee, graduating from the latter in 2004. That year he played as a member of the Berklee Monterey Quartet at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Scott made his recording debut on Donald Harrison’s Real Life Stories in 2002. Four years later when he was 22, he led his first CD, Rewind That, a set that mixed together rock, R&B and fusion with modern jazz. He has since followed up with Anthem, an original recording inspired by the horrific damage caused by Hurricane Katrina and the government’s indifference. Scott appears as a guest on recordings by Nnenna Freelon, Erin Boheme and Boney James and has worked in R&B settings with Mos Def and Jill Scott. While he names Miles Davis as his main influence, Christian Scott has a sound and style of his own, and an enormous amount of potential.
