Marco Benevento is an inventive keyboardist and composer who has gained some attention for his work with the Benevento/Russo Duo, an experimental group mixing together aspects of adventurous jazz, indie-rock and jam-bands Benevento was born in New Jersey in 1977. He began playing piano at seven and was 15 when he became interested in jazz. Benevento attended the Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1999. He was a member of the Jazz Farmers (2000-2001), moved to New York in 2001 and became part of New York’s experimental jazz scene. He studied with Kenny Werner, Brad Mehldau and Joanne Brackeen, and has played with Steve Bernstein, Wayne Krantz, Charlie Hunter and Stanton Moore.
He formed the Benevento/Russo Duo with drummer Joe Russo in 2001 when the two old friends (they knew each other in junior high school) ran into each other. Thus far they have mostly performed at the Knitting Factory and at rock festivals in addition to recording five albums, but have been recently appearing at jazz clubs too including the midnight series at Preservation Hall in New Orleans. In addition, Benevento has played with Trey Anastasio (both the keyboardist and Russo were in his backup band), Bobby Previte’s Coalition of the Willing, in the bands GRAB and Garage a Trois. Marco Benevento has recorded as a leader for Ropeadope (most recently a three-CD live set) and Hyena.
