Gerald Veasley’s Electric Mingus Project is a reimagining of the work of acclaimed jazz composer Charles Mingus. The group’s self-titled debut album features a collection of well-known Mingus pieces including Haitian Fight Song, performed using modern grooves and modern instruments such as the six-string electric bass, E.V.I. (Electronic Valve Instrument), and E.W.I. (Electronic Wind Instrument). Veasley, former bassist for Joe Zawinul’s, Zawinul Syndicate and Grover Washington Jr., has released eight solo albums of original jazz, funk, and soul compositions. The Electric Mingus Project offers an intriguing blend of Veasley’s cutting-edge style and Mingus’s legendary compositional voice.
