Dianne Reeves
Dianne Reeves has been among the top singers in jazz for the past 20 years. A superior interpreter of lyrics, a skilled scat singer and possessor of a warm voice, Reeves often stretches herself beyond jazz into original folk music and African-oriented pieces, although she can swing with the very best. Born and raised in Detroit, she was a fine singer even as a teenager when she recorded with her high school band. Reeves attended the University of Colorado and was encouraged by Clark Terry, who had her sit in with his group.
Starting in 1976, Reeves did studio work in Los Angeles. She toured with the Latin rock group Caldera and had associations with Sergio Mendes in 1981 and Harry Belafonte during 1983-86. After she began recording as a leader in 1982, Reeves became a fixture at jazz festivals and gradually worked her way up to becoming a headliner. Although her sets could be very eclectic, with some of the performances veering toward world music and pop, her abilities as a jazz singer were obvious. Signing with Blue Note in 1987 was an important step, and Reeves has recorded several classic albums since then including I Remember, The Grand Encounter, The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan and A Little Moonlight. In 2005, she appeared onscreen singing vintage standards in the George Clooney film Good Night & Good Luck.
