Melody Gardot has overcome a terrible accident to carve out an important musical career. Born in New Jersey, she sang and played piano, appearing in Philadelphia-area night clubs as a teenager, inspired by jazz, rock, folk and pop music. But when she was 19, she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle and suffered multiple head injuries and pelvic fractures. Melody did her best to concentrate on music during her long recovery, writing and recording songs at her doctor’s suggestion while in her hospital bed. The music eventually become her EP Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions. Despite great physical difficulties, the 22-year-old has had an active career, recording Worrisome Heart (which was released two years after her accident) and touring, mostly on the East Coast. Her beautiful voice and accompanying piano and guitar playing are matched by her inventive and creative songwriting ability. Her music encompasses jazz, folk, blues and even bits of country, all of it quite original and a testament to both her abilities and her courage. She has a great deal to say in her music and is at the beginning of what will certainly be a significant career.
