Dukes of DIxieland

The DUKES of Dixieland blow traditional jazz and Dixieland into the 21st Century, weaving strands of pop, gospel, and country with authentic New Orleans sounds. More than 40 years of tradition stand behind today's Dukes as they step forward with a sound that is durable and flexible, as jazz is meant to be. The DUKES of Dixieland - strong tradition, new ground, great sounds.

The DUKES have worn their New Orleans jazz heritage proudly as globe-trotting jazz ambassadors from the heart of the Big Easy. They are the oldest continuing Dixieland jazz band and have sold out such venues as The Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian, to name but a few. Bright and brassy or smooth and dark as cane syrup, the DUKES bring a time-honored authenticity to all of the hits of Dixie's yesteryear.

40 years ago,in the spring of 1974, television producer John Shoup relaunched the DUKES of Dixieland to keep Dixieland Music alive and relevant. The DUKES did their first symphony concert with the Grant Park Pops in Chicago that summer, and later that year they opened their first jazz club, Dukes Place, atop the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans' French Quarter, the site of Louis Prima's old club. There, the DUKES hosted the winner of the first Superdome Superbowl, Arthur Rooney and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over the next 25 years1975-2000 the DUKES recorded 18 albums, appeared with hundreds of orchestras, celebrated five birthdays with Bob Hope, and operated nightly at either their jazz clubs - DUKES Place (1974-1986), Mahogany HAll (!981-1992), or the Steamboat NATCHEZ (1993-Present), promoting New Orleans Jazz. They still perform nightly on the NATCHEZ, and this year will be their 20th anniversary on the boat.

In 2000, the DUKES and Moses Hogan and his New Orleans Gospel Choir Collaborated on an album titled Gloryland which was nominated for a Grammy. In 2005, they collaborated with Blues singer Luther Kent during a Bush-Clinton Katrina fundraiser, and came up with three albums, including a Christmas album. Last year they released the album When Country Meets Dixie with the Oak Ridge Boys and a half dozen other country artists, crossing over into the country genre. In early 2013 they released Superbowl @ Mardi Gras 2013. Today the DUKES of Dixieland continue to promote New Orleans Jazz, always pushing the envelope yet maintaining tradition., always adding young, high energy classically trained musicians to their mission.
