Winner of the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and the recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1983, the 76-year-old New York City native has recorded over 70 albums, inarguably altered the course of jazz, and shared stages with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Jackie McLean.
