About Kathryn Ballard Shut

KATHRYN BALLARD SHUT (pronounced /shoot/) is an accomplished jazz pianist and vocalist, living and working in the Denver, Colorado live music scene, and grew up surrounded by both music lovers and working musicians.

Classically trained on the piano beginning at age 8, reeds at age 10, and incorporating jazz theory by age 14, Kathryn has served as both pianist and woodwind "doubler" in big bands (clarinet/flute/saxes) as well as small combos. She is a past member of the Kansas City All District Jazz Band (on Bari Sax) and was the honored recipient of the coveted national music award (John Philip Sousa Band Award), representing excellence in music from her high school in her senior year. Most recently, Kathryn served as a prominent member of several jazz orchestras within The Colorado Jazz Workshop under the leadership of Hugh Ragin and is currently a co-composer/author with the Italian jazz-funk ensemble, Camera Soul (http://www.reverbnation.com/camsoul).

Kathryn was co-founder and former pianist of the classic jazz small ensemble, 'Lost Soul Jazz Combo', now led by trumpeter Mike Evans (album: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/lostsoul3) and has played major venues in Denver (including a sold out show in the dining room of the famous Dazzle Restaurant) with several prominent groups.

In addition to collaborating with jazz & soul master and father, the late Tim Ballard, Kathryn has also worked closely with Latino film and music stars Daniel Valdez (of films 'Zoot Suit' and 'La Bamba'; stage production, 'The Westside Oratorio'), as well as with Front Range jazz artists Tony Exum Jr, Mark Diamond, Keith Oxman, Drew Morell, Hugh Ragin, Linda Theus-Lee, Mike Evans, Kevin MacInness, Jared Johnson, Jean-Luc Davis, Ron Bland, and many other excellent artists. As mentioned, she also works remotely with Bari,Italy-based composer-brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo to assist in writing music for Camera Soul.

Kathryn keeps busy as president of Denver-based TIMKAT Entertainment, an independent jazz & soul record label and booking agency that focuses on promoting world-class, independent jazz, soul, and R&B talent for live performances, multimedia projects, and digital album sales online. She has also served as a member since 2008 of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS/"GRAMMYs").

In her "spare time", Kathryn is an active jazz blog contributor and her ideas can be found on music opinion sites such as NPR's "A Blog Supreme", DIYMusician (CDBABY.com), Reverb (HeyReverb.com), AllAboutJazz, and of course, JazzTimes Community Pages.
