About James Chism

James Chism
Vice President, Jazzonian
Curator & Event Chair, South Florida Jazz Summit

Long time jazz enthusiast, James Chism has worked with Jazzonian since 2010, first as a volunteer and ultimately becoming curator for the multimedia cultural arts exhibit. He has hosted a variety of events ranging from listening parties, film series and fundraisers promoting Jazzonian and it’s yearly South Florida Jazz Summit, an education and networking conference.

Since it’s inception last year, James’ Facebook page, “Friends Jazz Consortium,” has amassed 2,200 members, connecting Jazz artists, disc jockeys, programmers and enthusiasts in the United States and worldwide. He has been interviewed on jazz radio programs in South Florida and Michigan for his active role in all things jazz.

Growing up in the Detroit area, he was first introduced to jazz by his older brothers at the age of 10, and quickly became emerged in the rich music heritage for which Detroit is noted. His powerful appreciation for this truly American art form is reflected in his role with The Young Jazz Leaders Scholarship fund for the development of future leaders in the community, empowering the next generation of jazz musicians.

James has worked in management for the past 15 years for various corporate financial companies including HSBC, Triad Financial, Applied Card Systems and Martini, Hughes & Grossman. He attended Pierce College Fort Steilacoom and Los Angeles City College upon graduation from Pontiac Northern High School. James served two tours of duty in Korea and Germany, receiving an Honorable Discharge as an E-5 Sergeant in the U.S. Army in 1985.
