About Dave Sterner

Saxophonist Dave Sterner has grabbed influences from every place he’s visited in his musical journey. Growing up in the Midwest in the 70s, he has a solid base in funk and the blues, rounded off with a degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance from Indiana University. But Dave is definitely more than the sum of his influences. Through all this alchemy comes his unmistakable sound– sweet but focused, disciplined but free, suggestive but definitive.

Based in his home town of Cleveland, he has performed with David Sanborn, Phil Woods, Louis Bellson, Aretha Franklin, the Manhattan Transfer, The Temptations, Tony Bennett, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and many more nationally-known artists. He has also recorded with Ernie Krivda’s Fat Tuesday Big Band, N. Glenn Davis (Jazzed Media) and the Jazz Heritage Orchestra. In 2006, The Dave Sterner Quintet released the self-produced CD What’s What.

Sidetracked (Speak Jazz Records, 2011) is Sterner’s second quintet release, and it features ten original compositions inspired by the traditions of Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver, it’s mixed with the modern language of Joshua Redman and John Ellis.
