About J. R. Spencer


J. R. Spencer is internationally recognized jazz pianist, vocalist, musicologist/author, music coach and artist developer.

Currently residing in Long Beach, California he is the owner of Spencer Music and Artist Development and coaches students of all ages and levels in the following: piano, digital keyboards, harpsichord, voice, acting, violin, viola, mandolin, music theory/composition/ear training, songwriting, kindermusik, music therapy, and musicology.

As a jazz recording artist his new album "Ragtime Elegance" will feature rag of Scott Joplin and rare Classical Ragtime composers from 1901-1912. Look for this album on I-tunes and Amazon. Due out January 1, 2014. His cool jazz album of original piano arrangements "Blue Gardenia" featured standards inspired from film noir of the 1940s/1950s and did very well in local distribution in Southern California. His album of original stride arrangements "Just In Time" was featured programming music for the Ritz Carlton Hotel Resorts.

As an author, J. R. Spencer wrote the first book on jazz vocal legend, actress and tv personality Julie London entitled: "Lady Liberty: The Definitive Julie London Handbook." The book has received several 5 star reviews from local and national magazines. His book: An Historical Study of Kurt Weil's Der Silbersee is the first book to concentrate on Kurt Weill's last German stage work before his escape out of Nazi Germany. Both books are available through Amazon.com.

As a jazz performer Mr. Spencer's performance credits include: Jazz Cafe (London), Cinegrill (Hollywood), Ritz Carlton Resort and Spa (Laguna Niguel), Disneyland Resort (Anaheim), SS Queen Mary Hotel (Long Beach), The Sky Room at The Breakers (Long Beach), The Fairmont Empress (Victoria, Canada, B. C.) and the Halekulani Resort (Honolulu, Hawai'i).
