The Most Important Day In American Musical History

In 1912, James Reese Europe conducted the all-black Clef Club Orchestra in a performance at Carnegie Hall which introduced black syncopated music to an elite white audience for the first time. The music world was never the same.

Mark Jones is an eighth generation native of the South Carolina Low country. He is an author, historian, tour guide and tour owner. With his wife, novelist Rebel Sinclair, Jones operates Black Cat Tours, conducting night time walking tours which cover the darker history of Charleston, SC.

He is the author of five books about South Carolina history and culture. His most recent book is "Doin' the Charleston: Black Roots of American Popular Music & the Jenkins Orphanage Legacy."
