Ernest studied at the Conservatories of Esch-sur-Alzette and later at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Berklee College of Music in Boston. In his native Luxembourg, he is the founder director and lead trumpet in the Luxembourg Jazz Orchestra and has been a member of the Musique militaire grand-ducale (the Luxembourg Military Band) where he is lead trumpet and leader of the big band.
Recent venues have included festivals in Chicago , Calgary , Vancouver, Edmonton , New Orleans, Karlsbad (Czech Republic) and Cleveland, Ohio.
For the 2013 Rythm in The Kitchen Music Festival Ernie Hammes will be accompanied by French Pianist Pierre Alain Goualch, Luxembourg drummer Paul Wiltgen and American bassit Aidan Carroll.
