Anzic Records Artist Anat Cohen to be Awarded the 2013 Paul Acket Award!
"The New York jazz community, long populated by players from around the world, has seen a major influx of excellent Israeli musicians in last 20 years. Among this crowd, the stand-out is doubtless Anat Cohen . . ." - Tad Hendrickson, The Wall Street Journal
"This is the kind of music - warm, human, diverse and irresistible - that will not only bring the clarinet back into favor, but jazz itself"
- Paul de Barros, The Seattle Times
"The lyric beauty of her tone, the easy fluidity of her technique and the extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all."- Howard Reich, The Chicago Tribune
"Along with her soulful mix of fire and finesse, Anat Cohen, the brilliant, Israeli-born clarinetist/saxophonist, is a jazz existentialist who plays completely in the moment with moving poetic expression, urgent directness, clarity and concision."
- Owen McNally, The Hartford Courant
Anat Cohen To Be Awarded the 2013 Paul Acket Award
at The North Sea Jazz Festival on July 12
Every year, the North Sea Jazz Festival hands out the Paul Acket Award to an artist deserving wider recognition for their extraordinary musicianship. The winner of the 2013 Paul Acket Award is Israeli clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen.
Anat Cohen will receive The Paul Acket Award at The Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival, where she will perform on Friday, July 12 (the Festival takes place on July 12, 13 and 14. The complete line up and time tables will be announced on April 25.)
The Paul Acket Award (named for the founder of The North Sea Jazz Festival), is supported by the Foundation BNP Paribas since 2011. Jean Jacques Goron, Managing Director of the Foundation: "A longstanding partner of jazz music, the BNP Paribas Foundation has been helping numerous musicians to forge their career. This is why, as a main partner of the Paul Acket Award, we wish to congratulate Anat Cohen. With her charismatic stage presence, Anat Cohen is fluent in a global set of styles, from Brazilian choro to blues to standards like La Vie en Rose, all performed with sheer joie de vivre. Her sound is as powerful as it sensual, hitting a captivating groove with interpretations that express a profound tenderness. This artist is clearly destined to become a leading lady in jazz. We wish her all the best."
Anat Cohen has been voted Clarinetist of the Year six years in a row by the Jazz Journalists Association, as well as 2012's Multi-Reeds Player of the Year. That's not to mention her topping of critics and readers polls in DownBeat Magazine several years running. Her latest album, Claroscuro, is in CMJ's top-50 Jazz albums of 2012, and JazzTimes Magazine's top-40 albums of 2012. Cohen was recently featured on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. In 2012 Cohen graced the covers of both JazzTimes Magazine and DownBeat Magazine, as well as being featured in publications around the world.
Anat Cohen - celebrated the world over for her expressive virtuosity on clarinet and saxophone, not to mention the sheer joie de vivre in her charismatic stage presence - has recently released her sixth album as a bandleader, Claroscuro, to widespread critical acclaim. Available now on Anzic Records. Cohen was joined in the studio by her ace working band - pianist Jason Lindner, double-bassist Joe Martin and drummer Daniel Freedman - as well as special guests: trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, percussionist Gilmar Gomez and star clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera. In its irresistible variety, Claroscuro encapsulates the description Jazz Police offered of Cohen in flight: "She becomes a singer, a poet, a mad scientist, laughing - musically - with the delight of reaching that new place, that new feeling, with each chorus."
Jury member Danny Melnick of the Newport Jazz Festival calls Anat Cohen, "one of the most expressive and joyful musicians in the world. She is an important part of today's New York and global jazz scene."
"Having found her instrument in the clarinet, she is the embodiment of a group of musicians playing in a so-called new tradition.", according to director Gent Jazz Festival Bertrand Flamang. "With much feeling and respect for the history of 'her' style, she brings a personal, fresh and enthusiastic approach."
With the Paul Acket Award the North Sea Jazz organization wants to highlight talented jazz musicians at the beginning of their career. These artists are already known within the jazz scene, but not yet recognized by a wider audience. Besides a trophy, the winner of the Paul Acket Awards also receives a check for 5000 euros, meant to push his/her career even further. Former winners of this award include Craig Taborn (2012), Arve Hendriksen (2011), Christian Scott (2010), Stefano Bollani (2009), Adam Rogers (2008), Gianluca Petrella (2007), Conrad Herwig (2006) and Ben Allison (2005).
