6 CLASS MEETINGS, DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED.
This special course covers topics of great interest that are not
discussed during the regular school year. Dr. Porter chooses topics on
consultation with the students, and takes their requests into account.
The class meeting times (six full day sessions) are also arranged with
students' schedules in mind. Topics covered in past summers include
Sonny Rollins, history of piano trios, jazz singers, history of world
music improvisation, Brubeck, etc.

SPRING
Not a history of jazz, but an intensive examination of the way jazz
history has been written and how statements became accepted as facts.
Involves research and writing projects aimed at developing new
approaches to jazz historiography.
