CCM Records releases CD "Limited Edition"
By saxist/flutist CHIP SHELTON, NYC, Jan.21, 2013
Chip Shelton, who also records with Summit Records, garnered prior critical acclaim with his eight (8) previous releases. This 9th Shelton release is a sampler of previously- unreleased material from two (2) diverse settings… one exotic the other momentous.
Setting 1 was recorded in 2005 before a live audience at Rive Gauche, Cairo Egypt. Featured are D. Gillespie’s “Night In Tunisia” (5:20); Shelton’s “Imprints” (4:35); and M. Davis’ “All Blues” (7:16).
The Cairo lineup features Chip Shelton- End Blown Flute; Darren Pickering- Piano; Vasily Vamitskii- Bass; and Hani El Alzari- Drums. The session was produced by Clifford Shelton and Omar Patterson. Recorded by a Cairo technician whose name is being researched, the material was mixed and mastered in NYC at M & I Studios.
Setting 2 was recorded October 30th and 31st, 2008, Halloween Weekend, at Cecil’s Jazzclub, West Orange, NJ. The theme for the live recording weekend was
“Cecil get’s the people out for Obama”. Three (3) days later Mr.Obama was elected president. It is uncanny that this project came together for release on January 21, 2013, coinciding exactly with Obama’s 2nd inauguration, and with the Martin Luther King (MLK) holiday
Featured are J. Heath’s “Heritage Hum” (6:04); Shelton’s “Now That You’ve Gone” (4:47); and F. Foster’s “Simone” (6:21).
The Cecil’s lineup features Chip Shelton- C Tenor Sax & End-blown Flute; Lou Volpe- Guitar; Jon Davis- Piano & Organ; Dwayne Cook Broadnax- Drums; and Daoud David Williams- Percussion. The session was produced by Chip Shelton and Cecil Brooks III; recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tom Tedesco.
