It is not wise to think that your dog has the same intelligence as you, they are dogs and do not possess the ability to think like we do. If you put this expectation on your animal, you will only wind up disappointed and frustrated. Follow the advice from this article, and you will be well on your way to having a well behaved dog.
The way dogs learn is by repeating techniques and being rewarded. After first, clearly demonstrate the behavior you are aiming for, set a daily routine and a regular reward for successfully practicing the behavior. This is the most efficient way for your dog to learn anything new. They learn best when you show them with repetition and varied rewards.
Challenge your dog to try new things and maintain the old things. Try giving them "quizzes" to see what they know, even if you know they will succeed.
Set your dog up for success when training him to stop chewing inappropriate items. Also realize that if a dog has a tendency to chew on non-edible things, it can be a bad habit. You should keep your dog in a safe place, away from items that are dangerous to chew. Items commonly found in a household can serve as elements of danger to the unsuspecting dog who is merely satisfying an urge to chew.
Recognize the triggers that encourage your dog's poor behavior and keep him occupied during the times that he is confronted by these temptations. For example, if your dog is not very sociable, then play with him when other dogs are in the area. This will allow him to make the relation between the positive stimuli and positive things happening.
Stop your puppy immediately if he is chewing on something he shouldn't. This will teach him what is appropriate to chew, so that he'll be less likely to chew on your belongings when you're not around.
If you want to train your dog the right way, consider enrolling in an obedience class. The trained instructors can help your pup with any issues he may have, including unnecessary barking, chewing, house training and normal obedience issues.
Consider the size of your dog when purchasing a bed. You can give your dog a bed that is sized appropriately, or consider an unconventional bed for your dog, such as a crib mattress. These are advantageous for the fact that you are able to regularly change the cover by using crib sheets. They're waterproof, too!
When in training with your new puppy, don't play rough games like tug of war. This type of game will encourage your puppy to bite your hands, and think it is okay. Any type of chasing or wrestling game will also do the same. There is no way that you want them to exhibit that type of behavior. When they are older you will be able to play those games with them without causing them to act out when not playing the game.
As mentioned before, training a dog is a prudent investment. An ill-behaved dog is destructive and a cause of stress for every family member; before long, he will be unwanted. Simply by following the advice provided in this article you can learn how to make the right decision and turn you rambunctious pup into a lovable pet.
