Playing tug-of-war with your puppy makes training less effective. These, along with chasing and wresting, can encourage them to bite your hands. This is a behavior you do not want to let them get started doing, so wait until they are older and more well-trained to play these types of games.
You can easily reinforce good behavior by using a clicker. All you should do is create an association between good things and the fun noise of the clicker. To begin, give the dog a treat immediately upon clicking. Do this several times each day. Soon, your dog will associate the click with 'reward' or other positive actions, which can be very helpful in shaping the desirable behaviors you hope to achieve.
If you are training more than one dog, remember that some breeds of dogs can be trained together, but some breeds cannot. Especially when you first begin training, your dogs can easily be distracted by each other or have different learning speeds so train them as individuals until they both fully grasp the concepts you are presenting.
Any type of introduction to unfamiliar animals needs to be attempted very slowly. Always take stock of your current family pets and how they will react to a new pet. Getting compatible pets is the key to a healthy home.
If there are certain things that set your dog off causing bad behavior, then keep his mind focused on other things as you pass by what provokes this bad behavior. For example, if it is difficult for your dog to be around other animals, you should distract him with praise and entertainment in order to keep him preoccupied when you walk past animals during your walks. By doing this, you prevent your dog from making a habit of bad behavior by giving him something positive to associate with the trigger situation.
Dogs tend to concentrate on one thing to the exclusion of everything else unless that concentration is interrupted. With enough training, you will have your dog focusing solely on your signals.
Consistency is one of the most important requirements for effective dog training. Make a list of all your commands, and ensure that anyone who might have to control your dog has this list. Only reward for good behavior. Bad behavior must have its own reaction. If different people are responding differently with the dog, it will make training difficult and confuse the dog.
When a behavioral problem suddenly occurs you should take the dog to the vet to eliminate health problems. Pain in an animal can cause erratic behavior. Since they can not communicate with us easily, they resort to the means that they think will give them more attention.
Crate training is very beneficial, but there can be difficulties that the following tips can help with. If they shy away from the crate, try placing a chew bone and shutting its gate when they are not inside. They can see and smell that bone, and they will want in the crate to have it. Once they enter the crate, be sure to praise them to show that what they did was good.
