A few Hungarian Christmas Traditions
With Christmas we celebrate that birth of Jesus Christ within Hungary. The main party is on Christmas Eve (it's Szenteste within Hungarian, meaning Holy Night) Familiy members get together in the afternoon on 24th December and decorate the Christmas tree. Grandparents or elder brothers and sisters look after the the children, so they won't see their presents placed directly under the tree. The fragrant fir is adorned with colourful paper decorations and a special Hungarian Christmas candy (szaloncukor) covered in shinny coloured papers. Housewives cook traditional Hungarian Christmas dishes inside kitchen. We usually have fish soup, stuffed cabbage, pastry rolls filled with poppy seed, walnut or even chestnut stuffing (it's called bejgli in Hungarian). Family members exchange gifts at dusk on 24th December while listening to traditional Christmas songs. Within Hungary baby Jesus provides the presents, not Santa claus. We celebrate the planned arrival of Santa on 6 December, St. Nicholas Morning. At midnight people go to the midnight mass. Organ music and pine scent fill air in churches where people sing together classical Seasonal songs. Even non-religious people attend this mass because of its festive and uplifting surroundings. On the following a pair of days relatives and friends visit it the other at their homes, get traditional Christmas dishes and desserts.
Weather Approximately Christmas in Budapest
To look at was a little kid there was always thick snow all over Christmas. The first snowflakes fell usually afterwards of November. The temperatures were around zero or even below. Today it is challenging to tell what will be the weather like around Christmas. Due to global warming we now have not see any snow in earlier times couple of years. The elements around Christmas is sometimes rather mild and boring, with some rain, and it's crispy and sunny with crystal blue sky from time to time. I prefer the other, though I long for white Christmas every year.
