Denise Donatelli with John Toomey (piano), Jimmy Masters (bass), Jae Sinnett
The Atucks Theater May 12, 2012
As part of the Virginia Arts Festival vocalist Denise Donatelli along with John Toomey, Jimmy Masters and Jae Sinnett treated its audience to a beautiful evening of fresh renditions of jazz standards and some not as well known songs. Donatelli's warm natural voice conveyed each song effortlessly and though the arrangements were demanding she and her three accompanying musicians were confident in their flawless presentation. The ensemble was respectful of the music, never trying to outdo each with histrionics and allowed each musician to inject him and herself into the tune. Whether swinging hard or offering a thoughtful ballad, Donatelli and company offered a superb two sets of jazz, pop and Brazilian tunes. One hopes for a return engagement.
