Arthur Verocai is Back!
Musician album anthology recreates a concert recorded on film, prepares new album
In 1972, songwriter and guitarist Arthur Verocai released his first solo album, after years working as an arranger for many stars of Brazilian music. He was then emplacado copyright successes in the voices of Elis Regina (A New Course) Maysa (Pinwheel) and others, and acted as musical director and conductor at several shows highlighting The Life of Braguinha beside Various Artists and groups Quartet in Cy and MPB-4.
However, few people understand "those crazy" "500 trends", mixing jazz, bossa, experimentalism, which Verocai made the first album. "I heard Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Weather Report, liked everything. What was stored in the HD was out unconsciously. I gathered everything," he says. Despite having played one or another band radios at night in Rio, as the Jornal do Brazil and Tamoio ("FM at that time did not exist"), the album fell into limbo. The musician himself, frustrated with virtually no impact of the work to which he devoted himself with total energy, just by boycotting them. Until it was rediscovered by American rappers and became a cult since Little Brother sampled a snippet to do Caboclo We Got Now.
On March 15, 2009, directing an orchestra of 30 musicians, between Brazilians and Americans, including Airto Moreira and his daughter Diana Booker, Verocai held a concert with the repertoire of this album in Los Angeles to a packed and rapt audience. Brian Cross, Eric Coleman and Andrew Lojero produced the filming of the concert for his famous series Timeless, and the movie screens now comes to Brazil, after being released on DVD in the U.S..
"We rehearsed two days before the concert in Los Angeles, and when I looked for that big theater, empty, with 1,200 seats, said someone will be coming here? The day was full of the presentation was impressive," recalls Verocai. "The film is edited, does not appear much, but when I received an ovation that left me amazed. The guys howled. I arrived in front of the orchestra, made a deathly silence as a mark of respect. In the audience were many DJs, musicians young people up 30 years in the majority. "
The conductor recalled that he had "carte blanche" to make the record of 1972, which is just under your name. "I made my taste, I gave all there, and goes and nothing happens in terms of sales. I was starting to get into metiê advertising, so I lived it, gave some money legally. I'm a little crazy at this point, I said Fuck the market, the world, because I do not have space. "
He only returned to record another album, the independent Saudade Further, in 2002, with appearances by Ivan Lins and Azymuth. In 2007, Encore launched by the British label Ubiquity. With pieces for guitar quartet and several songs saved, now chasing sponsorship to record yet another album in 2011, in partnership with Brian Cross.
The film series Timeless is a good indicator for this. Verocai continued sporadically acting as arranger and in 2010 was invited by Marcelo Jeneci to create arrangements of several tunes from her debut album, Made to End. The Rio Kassin, producer of the album, is another enthusiast Verocai.
In addition to recreating the sensational arrangements of the legendary 1972 album, the maestro in the film shows its facets as a singer (in Caboclo) and guitarist in the instrumental version of the Children, which opens the second part of the concert, with a repertoire of his other albums and the unprecedented Flying to Los Angeles, who composed for the occasion, and advertising themes "that were not approved and turned into music," as fires, made for a campaign on the Amazon. "This tour was really cool, because I ended up influencing the next generation, as these people hip-hop."
