Cecil Taylor is “a pioneer of Free Jazz and the Third Stream of Jazz alongside Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis" says Howard Mandel in his book, Miles, Ornette, Cecil: Jazz Beyond Jazz.
Avant garde pianist Cecil Taylor is an artistic and cultural phenomenon. He has earned his stature as a well respected American poet, composer and pianist influencing the concept of music by producing complex improvised sounds, and parlaying the rhythmic patterns to be applicable in the rhythms of dance movements and poetry.
Taylor garnered critical acclaim when he performed for President Jimmy Carter on the White House Lawn alongside a prestigious roster of jazz luminaries in June 1978. Additionally, he has lectured as an in-residence artist for a number of universities including Gottingen in Germany, Antioch College, the University of Wisconsin, and Johns Hopkins University. Taylor has been the subject of several documentaries, was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973, a MacArthur Fellowship in 1991, received a Kennedy Center Jazz Legend honor in 2007, and an NEA grant in 2011 for the "Cecil Taylor a life of achievement Festival".
At 82 years old, Cecil Taylor is on a quest to convert his home in Fort Greene, Brooklyn into a living museum to share his collection of experiences in music, art, and poetry with the public. The Cecil Taylor Art Corporation is holding a benefit to raise funds to facilitate this project.
