During her regular Thursday night performance in the Green Hills section of Nashville, Beegie Adair casually turned to the audience and commented “Well, up until now, we have not recorded the trio live. After releasing over thirty studio recordings and performing all over the world, we felt maybe it was time to document the trio in a live-performance setting. We hope you enjoy the recording as much as we enjoyed creating it for you".
“The Real Thing - Live” embodies the sound, the feel, and most importantly the heart and soul of the Beegie Adair Trio. The performance breathes. It moves with the inspiration of each musician’s unique interaction and response to the moment. “The Real Thing - Live” is a gift to both long time fan along with first time listener. The interpretations of the beautifully written songs would surely grab the attention of each composer with a sense of “yes that is how I meant it to be performed.”
How can a trio keep it interesting? One answer is found by listening to Beegie Adair. She understands how to fully use her instrument. She has mastery of making the piano as narrow as she wishes one minute and then painting the room with rich voicings begging twenty fingers but delivered with just ten. Listening is sonic pleasure, seeing is pure magic, utterly captivating. She makes the ears want to see and the eyes want to listen.
The harmonic partnership between Ms. Adair and her bassist, Roger Spencer suggest an advanced case of musical mindreading. Mr. Spencer seemingly has control of all combinations to unlock any door to any room or hallway which she wants to explore.
Complimenting the group on drums is Chris Brown who gets everything out of a small, trio appropriate, drum kit. The drums are full of rich tone. The vast color of his cymbals are often bright and sizzling other times dark and dry. But always, RIGHT. His use of brushes and mallets are refreshing. His swing bounces to and fro with ease, all with the ability to respond at will to Ms. Adair’s moves. He often suggests his own ideas which subtly coax inspiration from his musical partners. His phrasing is impeccable. Always in place, but never pre-fabricated. Mr. Brown plays what fits; masterfully complimenting Mr. Spencer and Ms Adair.
The twelve compositions thoughtfully selected are a mix of classic standards, ballads, and even a bebop choice or two are mixed in. The Beegie Adair Trio shows why supremely talented musicians can entertain an audience with appealing and highly creative interpretation and expression.
The Venue? This performance was captured in the Jazz Cave at The Nashville Jazz Workshop. NJW is a living Jazz Education and Performance Center co-directed by Roger Spencer and Lori Meacham. Throughout the year, the NJW offers many jazz courses taught by professional working musicians. In addition, regular performances are given by faculty, students and internationally recognized guest performers. Kudu’s to the Nashville Jazz Workshop for providing such a needed source of leadership, education and performance opportunities for both aspiring and accomplished jazz musicians.
