On the Clare Fischer vocal album, ...And Sometimes Instruments, you'll discover 20 songs with originals like "Tom Cat" (written for his favorite feline), "Pan Pipe Dance," and Latin jazz staples such as "Bachi (also composed for a family pet) with new arrangements from Brent Fischer of "Morning," the wildly popular classic from the Fischer song catalogue.
Speaking of cats, producer Brent Fischer has assembled many world-class jazz musicians for both albums. The vocal album features Don Shelton (Hi-Lo's, Singers Unlimited) and studio veteran Gary Foster (Mel Tormé, Jane Monheit). Tracks offer compositions and arrangements penned by Clare and Brent including one written in the 30s by Clare's mother and uncle titled: "So What Do I Care?" "My Dad arranged and recorded most of this in the 70s but it was never released. I decided to finish and include it on this album, making it an 80-years time capsule," says Brent. "Memories of Gold, "originally titled Anniversario, was written for a friends' 50th anniversary. In "Mood Indigo" the part that sounds like a nylon string guitar is actually Brent's 6-string bass cleverly re-engineered. The 5 and 6 note chords in the vibraphone part are done using a 6 mallet grip (3 in each hand). "I designed in order to play Fischer harmonies," says Brent.
Fischer's musical fabric is as American as Apple Pie. There's order in freedom, unity in diversity and an overall sense of FUN is present in the arrangement, and the beautiful six-part harmony in "America the Beautiful" is no exception. It's a cool spin for your patriotic playlist with Bryan Pezzone on piano. "Bachi' (all six minutes and eleven seconds) features Cor Bakker (a former student of Clare's and a successful musician in Europe) on keyboards and Brent's arrangement on "Una Manana" (Morning in Spanish) gets your slow day grooving. The Portuguese version of "Morning" (Manhã") is also arranged by Brent. Surprisingly, all the guitar-sounds you hear are played by Brent on a 6-string bass. In "Chopin's Etude opus 10 no 6," the Fischers make the human voice come alive as an exotic instrument spotlighting their choral arrangements. "Upon first looking at my father's vocal score, I was immediately aware from the type of syncopations that he had treated it as a Bossa. With that in mind, I wrote a concurrent instrumental arrangement to blend with the choir," says Brent who recorded the album at Fischer compound in Studio City and Clearlake Audio in North Hollywood.
