CD Review: Amikaeyla & Trelawny Rose - To Eva with Love: A Celebration of Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy was a wonderful singer equally comfortable singing different styles ranging from jazz, gospel, blues, rock, and everything in between. Unfortunately Cassidy died in 1992 at the age of 33 from a melanoma, leaving the music world without one of the best voices in the last decades. Amikaeyla & Trelawny Rose To Eva with Love, recorded live at Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, California is a certainly a well deserved celebration of Cassidy musical legacy.

The styles on this release are as diverse as Eva Cassidy's music. Sting's "Fields of Gold" has some elements of rock and country similar to Melissa Etheridge with a touch of jazz provided by Wayne Wallace melodies on the trombone. Amikaeyla and Trelawny sing beautiful harmonies over the folksy feel of "Songbird" and on the hymn like "Tall Trees".

The classical "Prelude" gives way to the sublime, re-harmonized version of "Over the Rainbow". Amikaeyla and Trelawny exchange phrases in "Time after time", one of Cindy Lauper most beautiful compositions. Both singers deliver exquisite solo performances, Trelawny on the gospel piece "People get ready" and the Irish classic "Danny Boy", Amykaeyla on the southern rock arrangement of Nightbird and the ballad "Autumn Leaves".

Tracks: Fields of Gold, Songbird, Prelude, Over the Rainbow, Time after time, Autumn Leaves, Prayer for Eva, Kathy's Song, People get ready, Nightbird, Danny Boy, Tall Trees, Wonderful World

Musicians: Amikaeyla and Trelawny Rose - vocals, Wayne Wallace - Trombone, John Santos - percussion, David Belove - bass, David Flores - drums, Vince Mellone - guitar, Simon Rochester - keyboard
