(ARC-2222) JOHN MEDESKI & LEE SHAW – Together Again: Live at The Egg
(ARC-2239) THE LEE SHAW TRIO LIVE AT ART GALLERY REUTLINGEN

“TOGETHER AGAIN: Live At the Egg” Features Shaw & Trio With Her Former Student John Medeski and “Live at Art Gallery Reutlingen” Features Shaw’s Trio — bassist Rich Syracuse & drummer Jeff ‘Siege’ Siegel — with European saxophonists Johannes Enders & Michael Lutzeier; both CDs release on January 18, 2011 on ARC.

Dr. Lee Shaw was born in Ada, Oklahoma. She began studying piano at the age of five. After graduating from high school, she attended the Oklahoma College for Women where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano. She earned her Master’s degree in piano at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She also studied privately with concert pianist, Jesus Maria Sanroma in Puerto Rico.

When she began playing piano in nightclubs in Chicago, she was sharing bills with the likes of Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. It was the 1950s, and fresh out of the conservatory, she drew mostly on her classical background, her encyclopedic knowledge of popular songs and her uncanny ability to play in any key. At 84 years old, Shaw has enjoyed an incomparably rich and long career in music.

She has performed with Al Gray, Dexter Gordon, Frank Wess and many others as a member of ensemble rhythm sections. The Lee Shaw Trio finds her teamed with Rich Syracuse on bass and Jeff "Siege" Siegel on drums. As an educator of note, her most famous pupil is arguably John Medeski (keyboardist and member of Medeski, Martin and Wood).

"Together Again" features four compositions by Shaw and three by Medeski. "Live Art Gallery Reutlingen" features two excellent German saxophonists. The first four tracks present Michael Lutzeier, while tracks 5, 6 and 8 feature Johannes Enders' virtuosity.
