Dave Glasser - Evolution

Swing and solid jazz performance is what the latest from alto saxophonist Dave Glasser titled Evolution throws out to the listener. Glasser who is a tremendous alto player has performed with so many jazz greats that I lost count at press. His latest release, which is a new quartet recording just plain swings. Evolution as it is titled is four-star jazz at its best.

The opening number “Monkish” of course has the tones and style compositionally of the great master himself. Glasser then jumps onto the gas pedal with another original titled “Minor Madness.” This alto man has an edge to his playing like no other. He cuts the notes and posses one of the most original sax sounds out there. Up next is Glasser’s “Tranquility” that is a slow paced ballad that again allows him to demonstrate the technique and sheer beauty of his playing.

John Nyerges on piano, Jeff Campbell on bass, and Rich Thompson on drums join Glasser on Evolution. Nyerges offers up the original “Monk’s Blues.” Drummer Thompson puts forward “Les is more” and the project closes out with Monk’s “Rhthm- A-Ning” and another beautiful original by Glasser titled “Blue Iridescence.”

Some of the recording approach here has been done already and is not necessarily innovative, but the recording is a fine piece of work by one of the best alto players on the scene. Good Stuff!!
