One of the most talked about and revered musicians on any scene, Anat Cohen has not-so-quietly been making huge waves since the release of her critically acclaimed album, Claroscuro (on Anzic Records). This June 10-15, Anat will be appearing at The Village Vanguard with her trio, NY3, featuring bassist Martin Wind and drummer Matt Wilson. The trio will be playing original compositions and American songbook favorites, as well as inviting special guests to the stage throughout the week.
In other exciting news, Anat's brilliant version of Edit Piaf's signature song, "La Vie en Rose" (from Claroscuro), is featured in the major motion picture, The Other Woman (Twentieth Century Fox, 2014), starring Camern Diaz, Leslie Mann & Kate Upton.
Anat has spent much of February and March on the road, as musical director/saxophonist/clarinetist, with Newport Now 60, also featuring Randy Brecker, Karrin Allyson, Larry Grenadier, Ben Allison, Peter Martin, Mark Whitfield and Clarence Penn. This summer, Anat will be featured with Newport Now 60 at major festivals, performing at The Montreal Jazz Festival (6/26), The TD Ottawa Jazz Festival (6/27),The Rochester Jazz Festival (6/28), Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival (6/29), and The Newport Jazz Festival on August 2, Celebrating 60 Years of The Newport Jazz Festival! Anat will also join Mr. George Wein and The Newport All-Stars on stage at the Festival on August 3.
Anat will also join siblings Avishai and Yuval Cohen for performances in continued support of The 3 Cohens' much-celebrated recording, Tightrope (Anzic Records). Dates are scheduled for June 18 at The Enter Jazz Festival in Poznan, Poland, and June 20 at The Tel-Aviv Opera, Israel. Capping off an amazing year, Anat will be mounting a big European tour with her quartet in October and November.
Anat was in the studio recently, with producer and Anzic Records partner Oded Lev-Ari, recording the follow up album to Claroscuro. The new album will feature The Anat Cohen Quartet with Jason Lindner, Joe Martin and Daniel Freedman, plus special guests: Romero Lubambo on guitar, Gilmar Gomez on percussion and Choro Aventuroso (Vitor Goncalves on accordion, Cesar Garabini on seven string guitar, Sergio Krakowski on pandeiro). The recording, to be released in 2015, will feature music from Brazil, original compositions from Anat, and other covers.
Recently featured in The New York Times, Cohen has topped critics and readers polls in DownBeat Magazine several years running, and has once again been named "Clarinetist of The Year" for 2014 by the Jazz Journalists Association, holding the title for eight years running! Her latest album, Claroscuro, is in CMJ's top-50 Jazz albums of 2012, and JazzTimes Magazine's top-40 albums of 2012, plus it reached the best-selling charts on iTunes and Amazon, and peaked at #15 on the Billboard Jazz Chart. Cohen was recently featured on NPR's Fresh Air With Terry Gross, and in 2012 she graced the covers of both JazzTimes Magazine and DownBeat Magazine, was featured in The Wall Street Journal, and was covered extensively in publications around the world.
The Press on Anat Cohen:
"Ms. Cohen on the clarinet was a revelation. Using the clarinet's upper register, she could evoke infectious joy. In the lower register, her playing could conjure a deep, soulful melancholy. On up-tempo numbers, her improvisations weren't just bebop fast; they had a clarity and deep intelligence that is really quite rare. She made it look effortless, even as she was playing the most technically difficult of all the reed instruments... she took my breath away" - Joe Nocera, The New York Times
"The New York jazz community, long populated by players from around the world, has seen a major influx of excellent Israeli musicians in last 20 years. Among this crowd, the stand-out is doubtless Anat Cohen . . ." - Tad Hendrickson, The Wall Street Journal
"This is the kind of music - warm, human, diverse and irresistible - that will not only bring the clarinet back into favor, but jazz itself" - Paul de Barros, The Seattle Times
"The lyric beauty of her tone, the easy fluidity of her technique and the extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all." - Howard Reich, The Chicago Tribune
"Along with her soulful mix of fire and finesse, Anat Cohen, the brilliant, Israeli-born clarinetist/saxophonist, is a jazz existentialist who plays completely in the moment with moving poetic expression, urgent directness, clarity and concision."
- Owen McNally, The Hartford Courant
