The Strums of Melody
A guitar in hand, strumming and mesmerizing the audience with wonderful tunes has been a dream that inspired music lovers to learn how to play this instrument. Whenever we think of any genre of music, and musical instrument, we imagine a guitar first. During the 1970s and 1980s, guitar was the symbol of liberation. Hard Rockers created a sense of breaking free their incredible guitar playing skills. Name any rock band, be it Eagles, Rolling Stones, Guns ‘N’ Roses or Aerosmith, they always had a star guitarist. Besides Rock and Pop, the other form of music that has widely used guitars has been classic Jazz. Playing Jazz guitar is a delicate, intricate, versatile act. It has swing, self-invention of techniques and improvisation that keep evolving constantly over time.
Looking Back in Time
When we are talking about the Jazz guitar, we have to take names of those great guitarists who weaved magic with their fingers with the guitar strings. Some of those icons were Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Django Reinhardt, Larry Carlton, George Benson, and many others. Their creations show the depth, vastness and level of skill that Jazz music possesses. Compositions like ‘Full House’, ‘Last Nite’, ‘Breezin’, ‘Idle Moments’ or ‘Time on My Hands’ made history. It’s amazing the way those guitarists played chords with these tunes. Such compositions are usually done through acoustic guitars, Bass Guitar or with modern electric guitar.
In earlier times, when people thought of Jazz, the first instruments they imagined were the saxophone, trumpet or piano. Guitar is said to have been an integral part of Jazz since the time of the great Louis Armstrong. Some of the biggest names of this genre have been guitarists, and they are known for their high skill level on playing major/minor scales and augmented chords so wonderfully.
