Cyrus Chestnut plays at Havana Nights Jazz and Cigar Club in Virginia Beach,VA
Cyrus Chestnut, Jae Sinnett and Terry Burrell play what turns out to be the last five shows at Havana Nights
Little did anyone know, including the musicians, that after Cyrus Chestnut's last gig on Saturday night (the fifth of five sold out shows) that Havana Nights Jazz and Cigar Club would lock it's doors bringing an end to two years of providing the best jazz musicians to the Hampton Roads area. Even without knowing, Chestnut and company, drummer Jae Sinnett and bassist Terry Burrell, gave the club a rousing send off. Gospel, funk, be-bop, swing, straight ahead jazz, these three players left nothing on the bench with Chestnut sometime hitting the keys so hard the piano shook. Chestnut and Sinnett have worked together off and on for years and their interplay was both effortless and fun. Burrell, playing both stand up bass and bass guitar, was the perfect compliment taking center stage when he had to or adding support to Chestnut's thunderous playing. It's a shame Havana Nights had to go, but at least it went with a bang
