Straight ahead is a comfortable style for tenor saxophonist John McKenna, apparent in his flowing lines and polished phrasing on eight (mostly original) tunes of his debut recording. Pianist Larry Goldings, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Victor Lewis, sterling players in any setting, provide sturdy backing for McKenna to coax deep, warm tones and intelligent improvisations from his instrument.

McKenna doesn't push the envelope, yet he's no newcomer. His seasoned, sunny demeanor provides a pleasing listen.
