Supported by quality sidemen like bassist Michael Moore and drummer Terry Clarke, this little-known Colorado-based guitarist masterfully negotiates his way through ten tracks. The appearance of another melodic instrument (Mark Patterson on trombone) on a guitarist's debut recording often raises suspicions that help is needed; however, in this case it's clear that Bruning's motivations are purely musical.
Frequently comping and soloing sparsely a la Jim Hall, Bruning rarely plays a chord or note that's unnecessary. His melodic gifts shine through on tunes like the title track and "Elsa," while his chordal skill is displayed on "Young And Foolish" (tastefully played sans accompaniment), and the intro to "The Touch Of Your Lips." Throughout, Patterson, also Colorado based, plays like a veteran, more than doing justice to Bruning's music. Beautiful work from a guitarist who deserves to be recognized.
