Conversations With Bill Evans
A specialist in the works of the French Impressionists, classical pianist Thibaudet was especially attracted to the playing of Bill Evans, not so much for his idea content and innovations, but because the more ruminative aspects of his jazz style incorporated the musical sensibilities of Debussy, Ravel and Satie. Thibaudet does not claim to be an expert at jazz, but he does have a slight flair for it, at least within the limited expressive context of this sub-genre. The 12 tunes include "Waltz For Debby," "Noelle's Theme," "Here's That Rainy Day," "Since We Met," "Peace Piece" and "Your Story." Certainly no more exploitative than Joshua Rifkin's or Marvin Hamlisch's flirtations with Scott Joplin, Thibaudet's efforts in behalf of Evans might even result in a rekindled interest in the jazzman's own playing.
