Thanks a Million
This disc exemplifies what independent labels are all about. Solid music, tight camaraderie amongst the players and a sound that clearly comes from the minds of its makers. No studio intervention involved. No fluff, no catchy theme-just high quality musicianship. The cast here, Steve Million on piano, Randy Brecker (trumpet), Chris Potter (saxophone), Michael Moore (bass) and Ron Vincent (drums) have a nice easy simpatico. In some respects they remind me of the best bands led by Horace Silver or Lee Morgan. The group dynamic functions similarly and there's a nice bristling quality to the proceedings. It's an ensemble effort, though Brecker's contributions stand out for their intricacy and thoughtfulness. All in all, a satisfying swing-bop outing with little twists and turns that keep things interesting.
