Jazz Journalists Association Announces 2013 Journalism and Media Awards
Willard Jenkins receives Lifetime Achievement honor; JazzTimes named periodical of year
The Jazz Journalists Association announced the 2013 Jazz Awards winners in the journalism and media categories yesterday (June 19) at a ceremony at New York’s Blue Note. The awards follow the JJA’s May 1 announcement of winners in the jazz music and recordings categories.
Hosted by WBGO radio personality Josh Jackson, the event—which honored recipients voted on by members of the JJA—also featured live music by harpist Edmar Castaneda (winner of the JJA’s 2013 Jazz Award for Player of Instruments Rare in Jazz), singer Paulette Dozier with pianist Danny Mixon, and violinist Zach Brock’s trio. A special audio message by Sonny Rollins on the subject of jazz journalism was played prior to the award ceremony.
