Performing Arts High School Sextet to Perform
Mendocino concert on July 20 will include standards, classics and contemporary jazz
The Thelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet will perform at the 2013 Mendocino Music Festival on July 20 at 3 p.m. at Preston Hall on Main Street in Mendocino, Calif. The six young musicians each attend one of the 11 high schools that participate in the Monk Institute’s National Performing Arts High School program.
The concert will include tunes from This Side of Strayhorn, the latest CD release of jazz trumpeter Terell Stafford, with whom the Sextet recently toured, and feature standards, jazz classics and contemporary jazz. The program also will include a brief “what is jazz” presentation and Q&A session regarding the resurgence of jazz among today’s younger generation.
In addition to the performance, the members of the Sextet will conduct a Peer-to-Peer Jazz Workshop on Saturday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at the Matheson Theater on Ford Street in Mendocino. Music students from Northern California interested in participating in the workshop should contact the Mendocino Music Festival at 707 937-2044.
